Welcome to the College of Professional Education

Notice anything different? Those of you with a sharp eye probably picked up on something. We changed our name earlier this spring to the College of Professional Education.

The revision is small but meaningful. To be certain, we remain committed to our community-based initiatives, including our excellent summer camps, Osher Lifelong Learning Institute programs, and life-enrichment activities. Now, we’re doing even more to help professionals succeed in their chosen fields.

Here’s how we’re growing.

We’ve developed several new certificates based on current research of in-demand jobs. Many of these are stacking credentials that let you build on your knowledge. An example is our new suite of CompTIA courses (page 27). If you want to work in IT but don’t know where to begin, CompTIA IT Fundamentals+ gets you started. From there, you can branch out into A+, Network+, Security+, and beyond. Like our AutoCAD cover grad, Kason Barron, can tell you, these are courses that teach you skills to use on the job. We’ve also partnered with several colleges on campus (page 38) to help bring their programs to a wider audience. Now, if you want to learn data science, architecture, or business innovation from top professors, you can register right here with CPE.

Here’s what hasn’t changed.

We’re still about helping you reach the next level in your career. Whether you need an industry certification, a digital badge in leadership, or skills training for your company, the College of Professional Education is your resource to make it happen.

So while you might see a new name on your graduation certificate, our commitment to your success is the same. As always, we welcome feedback. Send us a note at our new inbox, KSUprofessional@kennesaw.edu.

Innovation Happens Here

When you think about CPE, what comes to mind? Culinary? Medical Assisting? Payroll? We pride ourselves on offering career-building programs that will never go out of style. Think about it: People love to eat, healthcare is universally important, and getting paid is paramount to our livelihood.

However, did you know we offer what some might perceive as nontraditional careers? For example, social media exploded in the early 2000s with the advent of platforms such as Facebook and MySpace. Now, posting, tweeting and sharing content on a full-time basis comes with an office, salary and benefits. Ask our Social Media Marketing graduates who have either secured jobs or developed their own businesses.

Data breaches are an unfortunate circumstance but we have an elegant solution – our Ethical Hacker certificate. This is one of our newest programs and is designed to thwart cyberattacks. Many of our students have experience in the information technology field, so this course takes it to another level!

Dave Durden, this edition’s featured student, discovered our Professional Investigator program. He wanted to add to his already impressive skillset of military service and protective services experience. Our course provided a way for him to enhance his business and continue to build upon his professional areas of interest. Learn more about him in our Spring 2019 Course Catalog.

CPE is the place where innovation happens. We are focused on keeping our traditional programs current while developing courses that will keep you on the leading edge of industry demands.

Regardless of where your interests are – healthcare, technology, business, culinary – we have a class for you. Prepare to elevate yourself to an incredible level of success!

Pat’s Portal

The community at OLLI continues to grow. Whether you are an active OLLI member or someone who is looking to participate, you will find adventure and excitement as you look through each page of course and trip listings. If our abundance of options makes it difficult for you to make your decision then, do not hesitate to contact me. I will help you sort out your ideas, plan your goals, and get set-up with everything OLLI.

Join OLLI’s Travel Group for getaways to the destinations of your dreams. This past May, OLLI took a trip to the historic lands of Ireland. It was an amazing trip for everyone who traveled.

We visited the Cliffs of Moher, Kylemore Abbey, and Giant’s Causeway, which was my personal favorite stop of the tour. We had the pleasure to see the columns made from 40,000 year old, cooled lava. The columns were massive, stretching from the sea to the foot of the cliffs.

Other highlights of the trip were Belfast, the Titanic Experience, and everyone’s favorite…the Hillsborough Castle where the Royal Family of Northern Ireland live. Our travelers enjoyed the guided tour of the Castle as they walked through elegant interiors and viewed luxurious, regal rooms.

We also visited other infamous castles in Dublin and Kilkenny. The group spent its leisure time traversing the Ring of Kerry and destinations like, the Kissing Stone at Blarney Castle and the House of Waterford Crystal. Every day was magical as we walked the medieval, cobblestone streets packed with Old World charm and visited the historic ports of the country-side alongside their fishing towns.

Near the end of the trip, we took a private boat to Garinish Island in Bantry Bay, where the beauty of Ireland can be seen for miles. Many OLLI students described their experience as a fulfillment of something on their bucket list. For others, the gorgeous, green, rolling hills and the picturesque thatched cottages were something they will never forget. Like our Facebook page at Facebook.com/KSUOLLI to view photos from our trips and get the latest news on all things OLLI. I am already getting excited about our upcoming trips that are being planned now.

As you choose your classes and decide on trips, let us know if you have your own suggestions. If you have a passion for a skill or hobby you believe should be available at OLLI, send me an email at pwalke43@kennesaw.edu with your thoughts. We love to incorporate new courses for our OLLI students and make sure each class will leave learners with an unforgettable experience. Let me know how I can help.

I wish you all the luck of the Irish in your future success with OLLI.

Taking You On Adventures In and Out of the Classroom

Wine, wisdom and you – all things that get better with age. Our OLLI Newsletter is no exception. Whether this is your first OLLI Newsletter or your 15th, I am thrilled to welcome and invite you to take this journey with us as we continue to enhance and evolve this publication created especially for you.

As you flip through the pages, you’ll notice the expansion of classes. With that said, this newsletter is definitely a keeper! We know it can be challenging to juggle work, travel, volunteering, family and OLLI. This newsletter is your solution – with six months of classes (instead of three), you’ll be able to plan for longer periods of time. You’ll have a head start on new courses as well as see the progression for those that build upon one another.

This being the case, we will now be mailing the newsletter twice each year. However, flyers will be available in the OLLI Suite with information on classes for the month. Also, be sure to join our email list for up-to-date information on courses, events and travel (email ccpe@kennesaw.edu).

Speaking of travel … pack your bags! Thanks to your helpful feedback from the OLLI Travel Group, we have three local day trips planned and are working on domestic overnight trips to see the fall colors in New England, a land/sea cruise to Alaska, and a Pacific Coast highway bus tour through California and Washington State.

Luck is also on your side – our international trip has been selected and we will be traveling to Ireland together! “Erin go bragh” and grab your passport! Details will be announced via email and Facebook.com/KSUOLLI. Registration will be available on our website. Get ready – the Emerald Isle awaits! Learn more about all of our travel plans on page 4.

As you continue to read this newsletter and highlight those classes of interest, just know that I am always open to your ideas. If there is a class you are interested in that we do not offer, just let me know! With locations at the Booth Museum in Cartersville and Laurel Canyon Soleil in Canton, we have a plethora of options! As the official OLLI contact person, I am always available for questions, suggestions and conversations.

I look forward to seeing you in class soon.
